Fundraising Goal
In preparation for my becoming a Bar Mitzvah, I am embracing Tikkun Olam (literally, “world repair”), and have chosen a tzedakah (charity) project that will honor both my Jewish and Cuban heritage. In collaboration with Hillel at Drew University, and El Patronato (Beth Shalom), I am collecting much needed healthcare and nutrition products for the Jews and non-Jews living in Cuba who may not be able to get these supplies otherwise.
Basic healthcare, hygiene and nutrition products that we take for granted in the U.S. are difficult or expensive to obtain in Cuba, and thus are often lacking in Cuba’s hospitals and pharmacies. El Patronato (Beth Shalom) operates a pharmacy, where the B'nai B'rith Cuban Jewish Relief Project and other supporters try keeping the shelves well stocked with antibiotics, vitamins, prescription & over-the-counter medications, as well as medical supplies. The pharmacy distributes these important supplies to the Jewish communities throughout the island. They also distribute other necessities such as clothing, powdered milk, food and religious items received from humanitarian efforts. El Patronato (Beth Shalom) also operates a Jewish Community Center with a Community Library and Youth Center that supports educational and recreational activities.
Hillel, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, is an international organization that provides opportunities for college students around the world to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity. Hillel’s mission is to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.
For my part, I’m looking to collect supplies, or donations to purchase supplies, for the El Patronato Pharmacy Project. Hillel has organized a group of members to hand deliver these supplies to Cuba in March 2013. My goal is to raise $1,000 in donations and medical supplies. While all over the counter medicines and supplies are needed and welcome, below are the categories that we're especially targeting:
Antihistamines (Zyrtec, Lovatidina, Claritin)
Pain relievers, fever reducers and anti-inflammatory medicines
Multi-Vitamins for adults, and Vitamins for children both solid and in drops
Nebulizers and inhalers for chronic asthma
Glucometer strips – One touch advance

Your support would be greatly appreciated. If interested, please email me to discuss how you can help. If you would like to help, but are not able to donate medical supplies, cash donations are welcome. The number 18 ("Chai") is a spiritual number in Judaism, and Jewish charities usually suggest the amounts to give in multiples of $18, which is called "giving chai". If you decide that you would like to make a donation, please consider "giving chai". If you have any questions about the organizations, the project or donations, please feel free to contact me by clicking Contact Me. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Regards,
Matt
